An Alt-Reality Take Re: Lafayette Sq/St. John’s Church
Only the worst misanthrope can disagree with the case for warmth and fellowship. A call for civility and kindness is a call for a better society, full of the trust and good faith that are at the foundation of a democracy.
[But] What do we do when our fellow citizens express views that are, in fact, contemptible? — Tom Nichols
Good question. Good answers would be welcome. Better ones, even more so. Better options would be a welcome presence, too.
Hugh Hewitt, who not too long ago demonstrated a respectable measure of rational thought regarding Donald Trump, for some time now has been in step with the predictable right-wing strategy and nonsense-fueled party-line of distract and then distract some more. (Another overdose courtesy of Trump-brand Kool-Aid.) For good measure, as do too many of his peers, he contributes an almost-obligatory, embarrassing dose of nonsense. Hewitt was once better than that.
It’s not that his specific nonsense is especially noteworthy. It’s not. Nor, as noted, is Hewitt by any means the sole practitioner or worst purveyor of conservative dissembling and misdirection. He’s not. The examples to be discussed here, however, are representative encapsulations of Trump-supportive commentary. Opponents of the Oval Office’s resident authoritarian narcissist just find it all so … maddening (the kindest assessment I can offer).
