Arguments about process are a fine distraction, as are faux concerns about the identity of the whistleblower. More specifically, several recent right-leaning op-ed pieces have laid out the arguments in favor of divulging that person’s identity. Arguments against doing so have likewise been offered for consideration. By the time this is published, the argument may be moot, given the leaks already evident.

Both leadership and prominent media voices aren’t always presenting their noblest effort at turning down the partisan volume. There’s a price to pay for encouraging more animosity by conjuring up what are at best disingenuous arguments. Consequences may not be evident immediately, but the slow and steady erosion of democracy’s foundations is a slow and steady erosion nonetheless. It can withstand only so many broadsides….
